About

Janet and Chris DeRosa started the New England Bamboo Company in 1988, after encouragement from horticulturist friend who worked at the Arnold Arboretum, Garry Koller. He had been plagued with calls about bamboo and after seeing an exhibit in the Boston Flower Show, featuring 25 cold hardy bamboo species, Gary was convinced that the De Rosas should sponsor a new chapter of the American Bamboo Society. At the same time they decided to open a new division of DeRosa Associates Incorporated called the “New England Bamboo Company”.

The couple introduced 36 new cold-hardy bamboo plants to New England and the rest of the Northeast Chapter of the American Bamboo Society.

Among some of their greatest achievements, before retirement, was having the honor of discovering and naming two new bamboo cultivars, Phyllostachys Aureosulcata 'Harbin' and Phyllostachys Nigra 'Elfin'.
